David is in politics because he believes that people matter most, and that we need a new era of positive politics in New Zealand.
As a former business consultant and diplomat, David is motivated by a desire to ensure that every Kiwi has the opportunity to work hard, get ahead, afford a home and raise their families.
The son of an Anglican minister, David was born in 1963 in Te Aroha. He learned the values of social justice and hard work from his father Bill, who was active in the Labour Party and sparked David’s interest in politics.
A Fulbright Scholar with a Master of Public Administration from Harvard, David understands the important role that education can play in unlocking new worlds of opportunities for young New Zealanders. He is committed to ensuring that every Kiwi kid, no matter who they are or where they were born, get the best education in the world.
In 1999 David was elected as the Member of Parliament for Titirangi, which became the New Lynn electorate in 2002. As a local MP, David has fought tirelessly for over 15 years to help thousands of local constituents in need. As Minister of Communications in Helen Clark's Government, he stood up to a monopoly in the telco industry, and unbundled the Telecom loop, ensuring cheaper broadband for all Kiwis.
